When you think of Massachusetts, you think often of the incredible city of Boston. But outside of this charming city there’s also a whole host of other exciting destinations to discover including quaint villages, charming towns, stunning scenery and beaches that can go for miles. If you are not planning a trip here, you should.

Originally settled in 1717 as a western parish of Middleborough, the town of Lakeville was later incorporated as a separate town in late 1853. The town’s name essentially comes from the system of known lakes in with in the town, including Assawompset Pond, Great Quittacas Pond, Little Quittacas Pond, Pocksha Pond, and also Long Pond.

Lakeville is also commonly referred to by many of the locals as “The Promised Land.” Long Pond is the source of the Acushnet River, and Assawompsett Pond is the source of the Nemasket River which also feeds the Taunton River. Ocean Spray is a one of the big companies that are headquartered in Lakeville town.

The town’s geography is mostly dominated by its namesake lakes in addition to the other main bodies of water and their feeder brooks and rivers where there are also several smaller ponds, as well as many more brooks and swamps that are heavily protected as a part of the Assonet Cedar Swamp Wildlife Management Area.

Besides all the things to do and see, there are also several small conservation areas, four country clubs and two parks, including the Ted Williams Camp, which was once the site of a summer baseball camp run by Ted Williams. There are about 31 known cemeteries in Lakeville, which is almost 1 per square mile.
